Amazon Canada prices moved constantly. The typical product finished August where it began.
Across 194,765 recorded checks, 61.9% of tracked products changed price at least once. Yet among products observed at both ends of the month, the median change was zero.
31 days of observed prices
Each column is one August day; height represents recorded checks. The final two days reflect a documented interruption in Amazon data access.
More products finished lower than higher.
For the 2,638 products with observations in both the opening and closing windows, one third ended August below their opening price. Just under one quarter finished higher; the rest were unchanged.
Beauty leaned down. Baby and toys did not.
Category direction uses the same opening-to-closing cohort. Bars describe only products with observations in both windows.
Movement is common. A lower price is not necessarily unusual.
2,708 products changed price during the month, producing 26,408 observed changes. That is why a crossed-out reference price is weak evidence: the useful comparison is a product’s own history, not the largest number beside it.
The zero median does not mean prices were calm. It means the product in the middle of the month-end distribution finished exactly where it started while thousands of prices moved around it.
How this index was calculated
Dipp analyzed every valid price observation stored from August 1 through August 31, 2026 UTC. Multiple checks of one product count as separate observations; identical consecutive values do not count as price changes.
The month-end comparison includes products with at least four August observations, at least one from August 1–3 and at least one from August 29–31. It compares the first eligible opening observation with the last eligible closing observation. This leaves 2,638 products and avoids treating products added mid-month as full-month comparisons.
Coverage is not a census of Amazon.ca. It reflects products Dipp tracked, and category mix is uneven. Amazon data access deteriorated late on August 30 and remained limited on August 31; the closing window spans three dates to reduce that disruption’s effect. Prices exclude coupons that were not represented in the displayed offer price and can change between checks.
